University of Pennsylvania Women's Rugby

Picture
Penn Women's Rugby is a club sport governed completely by its members. As a part of the Eastern Pennsylvania Rugby Union, we compete inter-collegiately, at the D-3 level, in both the fall and the spring. In addition to being competitive, we are quite a social group, and we tend to think of ourselves not just as a team, but also as a family. On that note, new players are ALWAYS welcome, NO experience necessary. We are always looking for prospective ruggers; if you are interested in checking out our club, feel free to contact one of the officers or by emailing our google group Penn.Womens.Rugby@gmail.com.

Rugby Terms you should know

Ruck- Like a maul, but ball is on the ground and heeled back into possession by players. Despite the rules, it's not always the ball that gets heeled back either.

Scrum- Where the oxen of rugby love to be. A way of restarting play after an infringement. The eight forwards from each team pack down in tight formation and the ball is served into the tunnel and heeled back for possession.

BlindsideNot your alter ego after too many beers, but the playing area nearest the touchline and next to a scrum, maul or ruck. Domain of loose forwards and scrumhalf.

Yellow Cards- yellow cards are received after repeated rule infractions, and the player is sent to the “sin bin” for a 10-minute penalty.

 Red Cards
- red cards are handed out for extreme infractions, and the player is kicked out of the game. Players who receive red cards are suspended for at least 2 weeks.
Try- scoring option worth 5 points.

Conversion Kick- scoring option worth 2 points, taken after a try is scored.
Drop goal and penalty kick- worth  3 points.

Boots - Studded sneakers.

Pitch
- The large rectangular field the game takes place on, with uprights on both ends.

MaulStruggle among players for ball that has not touched the ground.

Lineout- used to restart game play following a touch

Penalty kick- used to restart game play following a major penalty. The team with the penalty kick can choose to kick a field goal, kick into touch or decline the penalty kick and go to a scrum.

Touch- rugby speak for out of boundsOffside- when a player is in front of the ball while their team is attacking

Offside- when a player is in front of the ball while their team is attacking

Onside- when a player is behind the ball while their team is attacking
